5 Dominica Waterfalls Worth Chasing

Adventure isn’t difficult to find on the island of Dominica. Whether you’re a thrill seeker looking for a challenge or simply searching for a new area to discover on the Nature Island, chasing waterfalls can accomplish just that and more. With 365 rivers and 12 waterfalls in between, Dominica is home to a variety of waterfall hikes for all levels and majestic sites to be seen throughout. Below are some of our most awe-inspiring waterfalls around the island.

Trafalgar Falls

One of the most sought-after falls lies east of the village of Trafalgar. Seeing this spectacular site is not difficult, but just a short 10 minute walk will take you to a fascinating viewing platform to see the twin falls—Papa Falls (85m) and Mama Falls (40m). When looking at the falls, Papa Falls will be on the left and Mama Falls to the right. For a less strenuous view, you can stay on the platform or make your way to the foot of the falls. Go at your own risk as this is an adventurous trek over boulders. Along with the lush scenery to take in, you can take a dip into the hot springs of Trafalgar Falls. While making your way to the foot of the falls, be sure to pay attention with each step as you cross the large, often slippery boulders.

Waterfalls

Middleham Falls

If you’re looking for a bigger challenge, the Middleham Falls hike is an hour and half “intermediate” hike. It will bring you right into the heart of the Morne Trois Piton National Park rainforest. The scenery at Middleham Falls is striking with not only a 200 ft. waterfall, but a variety of trees, plants and shrubs. Staying back and viewing from afar, you can feel the cool spray of mist from the waterfall. If you’re feeling brave enough, the water beneath the falls is swimmable, yet cold.

Titou Gorge

Waterfalls can be more than just a spectacle from afar. In fact, they’re the perfect place for canyoning, otherwise known as waterfall rappelling. For the more adventurous, Titou Gorge is ideal for canyoning. It’s just a short 12 minute drive from Fort Young Hotel and one of the most exhilarating ways to explore the depths of Dominica. Throughout Titou Gorge, you’ll find countless waterfalls—nearly too many for us to name. Whether you’re rappelling or taking a break to soak it all in, this is truly a magical place to be.

Canyoning

Syndicate Falls

The Syndicate area is a popular place for hiking and spotting our nation’s bird, the Sisserou Parrot. Through the lush rainforest, you can take an easy 20 minute hike to find the Syndicate (Milton) Falls, a magnificent 100 foot. waterfall. It’s recommended to wear shoes that can get wet as it can be muddy as you hike through. The coastal village of Dublanc will be the reference point and just north of it you’ll find the signposted road with directions to the falls.

Emerald Falls

For a more relaxing, easy adventure, Emerald Falls is a painless 20-30 minute hike. The walk into the falls is entirely worth it as you will find breathtaking outlooks along the way. The hike is easier than others with a cleared pathway and wooden steps to guide you. Once you reach the falls, you’ll also find a wonderful waterfall grotto called Emerald Pool because of the green hue due to the tree-filtered sunlight. To create more of an adventure you can dip right into the pool and swim up to the waterfall as well.
