A Look Inside The Hidden Art Scene at Fort Young Hotel

Step inside Fort Young Hotel & Dive Resort in Dominica and you’ll be greeted by a vibrant art scene that celebrates the island’s rich cultural heritage. From the moment you enter, local artwork and photography adorns the walls, transforming every nook into a living, breathing exhibition.

Amenities That Function as Artistic Oases

The Museum Café, Marquis Bar & Lounge and Rum & Wine Cellar, in particular, are true standouts, with their walls serving as canvases for local artists and artisans to showcase their talent. Whether you’re shopping for local crafts and souvenirs, sipping a refreshing cocktail or savoring a delectable meal, you’ll find yourself immersed in a world of color and creativity.

The Old Oven Art Gallery: A Masterpiece Unveiled

The real gem of Fort Young Hotel’s art scene is the newly unveiled Old Oven Art Gallery. This stunning space, housed within the resort’s original brick oven and chimney, is a testament to the property’s commitment to preserving its historic roots while embracing contemporary artistic expression.

Here, you can find a rotating display of local artwork available for sale, along with curated exhibitions, intimate events, and private functions. The gallery’s crowning glory is a 172-square-foot skylight that bathes the space in natural light, creating a breathtaking ambiance for visitors to appreciate the rotating works.

Honoring a Cultural Icon

To celebrate its grand opening, Fort Young has dedicated the Old Oven Art Gallery to the late Dominican artist and cultural icon, Dr. Alwin Bully. The inaugural exhibition pays homage to Bully’s legacy with a retrospective of his drawings, paintings, and sculptures, as well as a curated selection of pieces from his private collection, featuring renowned local and regional artists.

A Dynamic Space for Artistic Expression

This three-month exhibition, made possible with the support of the Alwin Bully Foundation, is just the beginning of Fort Young Hotel’s commitment to fostering the island’s thriving art scene. With plans to curate and host exhibitions regularly, the Old Oven Art Gallery will be a dynamic space that celebrates the diverse talents of Dominica’s creative community.
