A Local’s Guide to Deep Sea Fishing in Dominica

Deep-sea fishing is one of the most sought after activities in Dominica and just 15 minutes from Fort Young Hotel lies the most premier fishing spots that the country has to offer. Board your vessel from the jetty and embark on an incredible day on the water while catching a diverse array of fish. Below, find just a few of the many exciting things you’ll witness during a day at sea.

The Cruise

For about one to four hours, you will set out into the best finishing zones in the area. Depending on your schedule, tours can start early in the morning or even depart close to the sunset hours. Your seasoned angler or tour guide will assist you in the handling of the equipment, give you a brief history on the area and even point out the occasional sperm whale sighting—a common occurrence here in Dominica. Your guide will be more than happy to help you better your technique or craft an entirely new skill.

The Fish

These waters are a fisherman’s dream. Here, you will find waters filled with marlin, sailfish, yellowfin skipjack, tarpon, wahoo, dorado, mackerel and so much more. These big-fish-waters offer one of the most exciting days of deep-sea fishing in all of the country. Plus, the warmer water temps allow for hours of fishing to fill your greatest desires.

After the Tour

In Dominica, fishing is a way of life. While this is a fun afternoon for tourists, the local community feels it is important to eat everything that they catch. Being wasteful is one of the culture’s top priorities—from food and beyond. During your tour, your guide will hold onto everything that is caught and bring it back into shore. Islanders have become skilled at preparing all different kinds of fish in a manner that will make your mouth water. So, be prepared to fuel your body with your catch of the day.
