Discover Dominica’s Artistic Spirit at Fort Young Hotel’s Old Oven Art Gallery

For those seeking to immerse themselves in the vibrant artistic expression of Dominica, the newly opened Old Oven Art Gallery at Fort Young Hotel is a must-visit destination. This premier art space champions the talents of local artists, providing a window into the island’s rich cultural heritage.

Honoring a Cultural Icon

The Old Oven Art Gallery made its debut on November 25, 2023, with an inaugural exhibition honoring the late cultural icon Dr. Alwin Bully. Curated by Carla Armour, the retrospective showcased Bully’s own works alongside selections from his personal collection, paying tribute to his immense contributions to Dominica’s arts scene.

Ongoing Celebration of Local Artists

Building on this powerful start, the gallery recently unveiled a new exhibition on April 30, 2024, featuring for-sale works from renowned Dominican artists including Carol Sorhaindo, Jenae Bell, Lowell Royer, Antonio Toledo, and Marie Louise Pierre Louis. This rotating showcase provides ongoing opportunities to experience and acquire pieces from the island’s most celebrated creators.

A Platform for Exposure & Growth

As part of GEMS Holdings‘ mission to foster the development of Dominica’s arts and culture, the Old Oven Art Gallery joins the Bwa Denn Art Gallery at Secret Bay, opening June 29, 2024, in offering a platform for local artists to gain invaluable exposure to both local and international audiences.

Aaron Hamilton, appointed as Curator for both galleries, expressed his enthusiasm: “By providing a platform for local artists to showcase and sell their work through multiple exhibitions during the year, we are confident that this initiative will create new opportunities and foster the growth of Dominica’s arts and culture.”

A Commitment to Artistic Legacy

The establishment of these dedicated art spaces underscores GEMS’ recognition of the immense talent within Dominica’s artistic community and their commitment to nurturing its continued growth. As visitors explore the Old Oven Art Gallery, they’ll gain a profound appreciation for the island’s vibrant culture and the incredible creativity that emerges from this natural paradise.
