Non-Stop from the U.S.
- American Airlines now offers an expanded schedule of daily non-stop flights from Miami (MIA) to Dominica’s Douglas Charles Airport (DOM).
- United Airlines provides a twice weekly non-stop flight from Newark (EWR) to Dominica, a convenient option for travelers from the Northeast.
Connections through the Caribbean
If you prefer more flexibility, JetBlue and Delta offer direct service to Antigua (ANU), Barbados (BGI), San Juan, Puerto Rico (SJU) and St. Maarten (SXM). From these hubs, you can connect to Dominica with a short regional flight on airlines such as InterCaribbean, WinAir, LIAT, Contour Airlines and Caribbean Airlines.
Regional Ferry Service
Travelers coming from nearby islands can also reach Dominica via the L’Express des Îles ferry. The fast ferry service connects Guadeloupe, Martinique, and Saint Lucia to Roseau, Dominica’s capital. The journey ranges from two to four hours depending on the route, and schedules typically operate daily.
Arrival and Transfers
Dominica main airport for international and regional arrivals is Douglas Charles Airport (DOM) on the northeast coast.
Upon arrival, customs and immigration are straightforward, and you will immediately feel the warm, unhurried pace of the island. Guests of Fort Young enjoy the ease of pre-arranged private transfers, so you can simply relax as you are driven through jungle landscapes toward the sea.
If you prefer flexibility, car rentals are available, though driving is on the left side of the road. Taxis are also readily available outside the airport.
Local Travel Tips
- Currency: The Eastern Caribbean Dollar (XCD) is the official currency, but U.S. dollars are widely accepted. Carrying small bills is useful for markets and roadside vendors.
- Packing: Bring lightweight layers, a rain jacket, sturdy hiking shoes, and reef safe sunscreen.
- Timing: Direct flights from Miami and Newark are most reliable in the high season (November to April). If connecting, check ferry and regional airline schedules in advance for smooth transitions.
- Layover Option: If your schedule requires an overnight in Antigua, Barbados, or St. Maarten, consider it an opportunity to enjoy a taste of another Caribbean island before continuing to Dominica.
