4 Unique Perspectives of the Nature Island

With a name like the Nature Island, Dominica is begging to be explored—by land, air and sea—from every possible angle. Here are 5 ways to experience Dominica from an unexpected or exhilarating perspective, via any of these unique island experiences.

1. By Boat

Surrounded by water with 365 rivers flowing through it, Dominica beckons a trip immersed and submerged in water. Take a shady glide along the mangrove-lined Indian River via a rowboat tour, keeping your eyes peeled for egrets, juvenile barracudas and more. For another perspective, hop in a motor-powered boat to view the island’s famous Waitukubuli Trail—an expansive hiking trail that stretches from the top of Dominica to the bottom—by sea.

2. On Foot

Dominica’s 12 magnificent waterfalls are worth the treks required to get to them. It’s about a 45-minute hike on foot to reach the dramatic Middleham Falls in all its 200-feet glory. Take your time on the hike, admiring the native flora and fauna and keeping your eyes and ears peeled for rare tropical birds! From the top of the waterfall or at its base, you’ll get a unique perspective of nature—sure to make you feel both small and inspired.

3. Under the Sea

Whether snorkeling just a few feet below the surface or diving deep, there’s a whole world to discover in Dominica’s waters. You’ll have the chance to immerse yourself in volcanic bubbles; discover a mysterious 18th century shipwreck; admire sea turtles, barracudas and sperm whales; and so much more. Our dive concierge can coordinate an unforgettable under-the-sea excursion for you.

4. By Cave

Explore the magical depths of Dominica via striking rock structures traversed only by thrill-seeking adventurers. Fort Young Hotel’s concierge can help arrange transportation, gear, and a guided tour. In addition to what’s right in front of you—deep caverns, expansive rocks, clear water—canyoning offers a truly unique view of the rainforest and waterfalls way above. Be sure to take the time to savor all kinds of views!
